Cashback Match end of first year
College students building credit for the first time who want real cash back rewards.
If you're a college student building credit from scratch, the Discover it Student Cash Back card is one of the most rewarding entry points available. The structure mirrors the regular Discover it Cash Back: you earn 5% on rotating quarterly categories (up to $1,500, after activation) and 1% on everything else, and at the end of your first year Discover doubles all cash back you earned with no cap and no minimum spend. That Cashback Match can be meaningful even on a student budget — hit the 5% categories consistently and your effective first-year rate on those purchases is 10%.
The card is designed for students who are new to credit. Discover doesn't require an existing credit history to apply, which removes the chicken-and-egg problem many first-time applicants face. You'll also get a shorter 0% intro APR window — 6 months on purchases versus 15 months on the regular version — but that's still useful for textbooks or back-to-school spending if you pay it off in time.
Who should get this: students in their first couple of years of college who want to start building a credit history while earning real rewards. There's no annual fee, no foreign transaction fee (great if you study abroad), and Discover's free FICO score monitoring helps you watch your credit grow.
Who should skip it: anyone not enrolled in school — Discover will ask for confirmation of student status. Also avoid this if you've previously held any Discover card, since the Cashback Match won't apply again. Non-students with a bit of credit history would do better with the regular Discover it Cash Back.
The closest alternative is the Capital One Quicksilver Student card, which offers a simpler flat 1.5% on everything with no categories to track. The trade-off: you miss out on the match multiplier. Don't let the quarterly activation requirement slip by — an unactivated quarter is points left on the table.
Cashback Match is available to NEW CARDMEMBERS ONLY. If you currently have or have previously held a Discover card, you may not qualify. The match period starts on account approval and runs through your first 365 days or 12 consecutive billing periods, whichever is longer. Account must be open and in good standing when the match is calculated. No minimum spend and no maximum — Discover matches every dollar of cash back earned.
