Cashback Match at end of first year
People rebuilding credit who want a no-fee secured card with real rewards and a path to upgrade.
The Discover it Secured stands apart from most secured cards by actually rewarding you while you build credit. You earn 2% cash back at gas stations and restaurants (on up to $1,000 in combined purchases per quarter, automatically) and 1% on everything else — and at the end of your first year, Discover matches every dollar of cash back you earned. That's real money back even on a card that requires a security deposit, and it's essentially unheard of in the secured card category.
The mechanics work like this: you deposit between $200 and $2,500, and that amount becomes your credit line. You use the card like a normal credit card, pay your bill on time, and Discover reports your activity to all three credit bureaus. The goal is to build enough of a track record that you graduate to an unsecured card — and Discover helps you get there faster by automatically reviewing your account every month starting at the 7-month mark to see if you qualify for an upgrade and a full refund of your deposit.
This card is best for people starting from zero — recent grads, new immigrants, or anyone who has never had a credit card — as well as people rebuilding after a financial setback. No prior credit history is required to apply. The $0 annual fee and 0% foreign transaction fee make it a low-cost way to establish credit.
Skip it if you're already approved for unsecured cards. The 26.49% ongoing APR is steep if you carry a balance, so this card demands that you pay your statement in full every month — which is good financial habit anyway. Also remember the new cardmember restriction: if you've had a Discover card before, the Cashback Match likely won't apply.
The closest competitor is the Capital One Secured Mastercard, but it offers no rewards at all. The Discover it Secured wins decisively on rewards while keeping the deposit requirement and path-to-unsecured upgrade competitive.
Cashback Match is available to NEW CARDMEMBERS ONLY. If you currently have or have previously held a Discover card, you may not qualify. The match period starts on account approval and runs through your first 365 days or 12 consecutive billing periods, whichever is longer. Account must be open and in good standing when the match is calculated. Security deposit ($200 minimum, $2,500 maximum) determines your credit limit. After 7 months, Discover begins automatic monthly reviews for possible upgrade to an unsecured card and return of deposit.
