75,000 American Airlines miles
American Airlines loyalists who fly regularly enough to benefit from free bags and preferred boarding.
The Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select is the entry-level co-branded American Airlines card, and right now it is offering considerably more than what was listed previously. The current public offer stands at 75,000 AAdvantage miles after $3,500 in spending in the first four months — a solid upgrade from the old 50,000-mile offer. If you can catch the in-flight or targeted promotion, 80,000 miles is available for as little as $1,000 in spending.
The card's standout perk is the free first checked bag for you and up to four companions on the same domestic American Airlines reservation. On a round trip for two, that is $140 in baggage fee savings alone — more than the $99 annual fee after the first year. Add preferred boarding and 25% back on in-flight food and drinks, and frequent American flyers get genuine day-to-day value from this card.
You should get this card if you fly American Airlines regularly, check bags, and want to earn AAdvantage miles on everyday spending. The oneworld alliance gives you flexibility to redeem miles on 13 partner airlines including British Airways, Japan Airlines, Cathay Pacific, and Qatar Airways, which opens doors to business and first class awards that would otherwise be extremely expensive.
Skip it if American is not your primary airline. The earning structure outside of AA purchases, restaurants, and gas is just 1 mile per dollar — mediocre compared to transferable-point cards that unlock a wider partner network. The Chase Sapphire Preferred is the closest alternative if you want flexible airline options rather than being tied to the AA ecosystem.
The biggest pitfall is the Citi 48-month eligibility rule, which is especially tricky here because the bonus posts to your AAdvantage account weeks after approval — and that post date, not your approval date, starts the four-year clock. If you held this card before, you may be waiting longer than you think. Also note the annual fee jumps to $99 after the free first year, so make sure you are flying AA often enough to justify renewal.
Citi 48-month rule applies per card: you are ineligible for the welcome bonus if you received a new account bonus on this specific card within the prior 48 months. The AAdvantage Platinum Select has its own 48-month clock independent of other Citi AAdvantage products (e.g., the Executive or the new Globe card). The bonus posts to your AAdvantage account weeks after approval — that post date starts the clock. Annual fee is $0 the first year, then $99.
